IT support refers to the services that certain entities offer to end users of certain technologies products or services. In simple terms, IT support simply refers to assistance regarding specific issues with a particular product or service, and not providing specialized training, modification or provision of that product, or any other technical support services. The field of IT support can cover all of those services as well as many others such as application support, server support, software testing and security, support for hardware devices and peripherals, management of large networks and so on. Some of these issues overlap significantly, and some do not, depending on what area of IT support a company is specialized in. One of the key roles of IT support staff is that of an operational support specialist. Operational support specialists are responsible for providing technical assistance to end-users, depending on the specific nature of the problem, such as setup issues or software licensing issues. Depending on the size of the company, an operational support specialist could include one or more specialized departments. A typical operational support specialist would include an IT expert, an information technology (IT) specialist, a network engineer, a computer specialist, a troubleshooting technician, a software engineer, or a number of other professionals.
