A physical therapist may also recommend exercise programs for patients with prior injuries and conditions that require specialized assessment and management. In the United States, there are an estimated five to eight physios for every surgeon. A licensed physiotherapist is required to be professionally certified before practicing in the United States. A physiotherapist education includes a four-year bachelor’s degree; a two-year associate’s degree; and up to three years of training at a college or university. To become a licensed physiotherapist in the United States, a student must pass a national examination known as the NCLEX-PN. Once the student passes this examination, he or she must also complete a minimum of six months of supervised instruction at an approved occupational health clinic in one of the 50 states in the U.S. Upon successful completion of his or her education and certification, a person will be able to apply for employment as a licensed physiotherapist.
