Kitchen Renovation Ideas – Blend The Old With The New

An old friend of mine moved a little more than 12 months ago to a stunning, late 19th century, Victorian style home. Many of the guests commented on the quaint old fashioned theme of the kitchen at a recent party she held at home and how cosy and welcoming it appeared. My friend mentioned at this point that she and her four children all thoroughly despised the kitchen area and would love to renovate and modernize it, but were totally daunted by the assignment and had not tried it. As she had heard many home improvement horror stories, her biggest concern was the perceived high cost of renovating an old home – people spending tens of thousands of dollars on what began to be very modest renovations, only to discover a variety of non-budgeted repairs and maintenance were also needed, thereby dramatically blowing out the projected costs. My friend didn’t like the thought of finding herself in a similar scenario, so the notion of reconstruction and repair work was shelved. A builder and another experienced interior decorator were one of the guests at the party and both clarified that while restoration work (restoring the building to ‘as new’ condition comparable to when the building was originally built) was very extensive and time consuming, a renovation (modernization) project was relatively inexpensive.

Ideas for kitchen redesign – Without the Fear Factor

Most homeowners, like my friend, have the misconception that old houses are extremely difficult to renovate simply because of their age, but this is not entirely right. In fact, a kitchen renovation almost always turns out to be very cost-effective, whether the house is old or fairly new, and the inhabitants can see a major improvement in the area. It is possible to prepare renovation ideas for old homes so that fresh products and appliances can be incorporated together with the older features of the kitchen, such as your new stainless steel refrigerator does not seem to be out of place in the same kitchen as an old wood-burning stove.
