Know More About Fresno Dermatology

Dermatology is the field of medicine related to the skin in a very fundamental sense. As a consequence, it may cover procedures dealing with skin-affecting disorders, tumours, illnesses, allergies and hormonal responses, as well as solely cosmetic improvements and/or the treatment of ‘blemishes.’ Therefore, such procedures will include areas such as surgery and pathology (diagnosis and treatment of diseases). Dermatologists with more complex names based on their fields of specialisation are considered specialists in the field (e.g., a dermatolopathologist will specialise in dermatolopathology – the pathology of skin).Feel free to find more information at Fresno Dermatology.

Despite the fact that skin disorders were handled and accepted over the course of human history, dermatology as a developed term only came into being towards the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. The coining of the word gave the branch of medicine a standardised name that included procedures and activities that would have been carried out for thousands of years. Some of the earliest mentions of advanced skin care actually date back to the ancient Egyptians. The tales of Cleopatra bathing in ass’s milk are known to all, and the skin effects of the lactic acid in the milk are still remembered today. The Egyptians, however, were known to use other substances such as alabaster, oils, and salt to change the appearance of their skin. Some chemicals have also been added to the skin for medical rather than aesthetic reasons, with arsenic being used, for example, to treat skin cancers.

The term dermatology itself comes from the Greek from first the French dermologie and then the Latinized term dermatologia for ‘skin’ derma and ‘to understand’ logy. The French were, in reality, early pioneers in the modern field of dermatology, opening the first school at the Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris in 1801. However, what we now regard as dermatology can be traced back to Europe in the early 16th century, and much of this early work centred on the use of classical chemicals as well as sunlight in conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

More advances in skin care using electrosurgery (treatment with electric currents) and cryosurgery (use of intense cold) were observed at the beginning of the 20th century, with subsequent developments in liposculpture (fat removal from under the skin surface) and hair transplantation taking place in the first half of the century. By using Phenol peels in particular, the early 1900s have witnessed the use of peels to strip away dead skin and reveal fresh, healthier skin.
