Regenerative Medicine – An Overview

Regenerative medicine is a rapidly developing area in medical science that has the potential to have an impact on all areas of medicine. It has the potential to revolutionize how we treat disease and improve the quality of life for millions of patients living with chronic diseases, like diabetes and arthritis. A study published in Nature Nanotechnology suggests that it may be possible to use stem cells from the body to treat and even cure certain types of cancer. The exciting news is that this technique is not new; however, it has only been around for the last ten years. QC Kinetix (Round Rock)

Regenerative medicine deals with the idea that the body has the ability to replenish its own damaged or diseased cells. In essence, the study is concerned with how to replace the cells of the organ that has been damaged or degenerated. In recent years there has been an increase in the focus of regenerative medicine as doctors have come to understand the potential benefits of using adult stem cells to treat or cure certain disease conditions. An example of this is the successful treatment of children with leukemia who were treated with stem cells from their own mothers. This is just one of the applications of stem cell therapy.

regenerative medicine applies the concept that the human body has the capacity to repair damaged or diseased tissues and organs, and in doing so helps to maintain normal function. The study focuses on the use of human cells (human progenitor cells) taken from the patient to replace damaged or degenerated tissues and organs in a patient with a progressive disease condition such as Alzheimer’s or diabetes. As this therapy has been around for a decade, and is proven to be effective in treating different types of cancers, heart diseases and other progressive diseases, there is no doubt that this therapy holds the key to the future of medical treatments.
